This year the people in charge of scheduling in both Major League Baseball and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament got everything picture perfect; end one season on the same day which the other begins. It’s very doubtful that this was a strategic move on the part of either one, however no one could have imagined it work out as picture perfect for everyone involved. On The Same DayOn the same day and night which the boys of summer kicked off their annual marathon of a season, arguably one of the greatest college basketball players that we’ve seen over the past thirty years culminated his outstanding career with a national championship. April 6, 2009 will go down as a very memorable day in sports history due to the fact that fans across the country were all witness to watching the a fresh new start along with the perfect ending. New York Yankees & North Carolina Tar HeelsOn the same day which CC Sabathia and Mark Teixiera, the $341M duo, made their unsuccessful New York Yankees debut Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green, who put off the NBA and millions and millions of dollars, all received something that money will never be able to buy, a championship. On the same day that the Cleveland Indians get drilled 9-1 by the Texas Rangers in Arlington in game one of one hundred and sixty two, the Michigan State Spartans got pummeled 89-72 by the North Carolina Tar Heels in the final game of the 2008-09 college basketball season. The same day which the New York Mets (something which they have had trouble with over the past two seasons) nail down a close 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds thanks to their two new bullpen additions, J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez; the Tar Heels provided everyone with the most points ever scored (55 points) in the first half of an NCAA Basketball Championship game. On the same day that Ken Griffey Jr. hits his first homer in a Mariners uniform in a decade we see Hansbrough, Green and possibly Ellington and Lawson in Jordan Brand crested Carolina blue Tar Heel jerseys and shorts. On the same day that the preseason favorite in the MLB to win it all, the Chicago Cubs won over their divisional rivals the Houston Astros, 4-2, the NCAA Basketball preseason favorites, the Heels, completed their mission that they set out on back in November. Two completely opposite ends of the sports spectrum combined together on the same day equaled one tremendous day of action for sports fans, enthusiast and journalists all alike. One can only hope that the schedule makers do us all a favor and slate these events to take place on yet the same day again in 2010.
