Posey, Allen, Brown, Japanese Top 2009 Arizona Fall League Squad

Oct 19, 2009 David Hein

Giants catcher Buster Posey, Arizona first baseman Brandon Allen, Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown and three Japanese pitchers top the Scottsdale Scorpions roster.

San Francisco Giants star catching prospect Buster Posey is probably the biggest name for the Scottsdale Scorpions roster for the 2009 Arizona Fall League. But there are other big names to follow on the Scorpions, including Arizona's slugging first baseman Brandon Allen, Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown and a trio of Japanese pitchers.

Pitchers

The biggest reason to watch the Scorpions pitching staff is a trio of Japanese pitchers - righties Toru Murata and Ken Nishimura and lefty Takanobu Tsujiuchi - all three under 24 years of age and all free agents. One pitcher some fans will know - especially Pirates and Cubs supporters - is Donnie Veal, a lefty who was chosen by Pittsburgh from Chicago in the Rule-5 draft and stayed with the Pirates for all of 2009. Now Pittsburgh wants to use the Arizona Fall League to give Veal some more work.

Catchers

The Giants do not yet know what they want to do with Buster Posey, who reached Triple-A Fresno last season. Depending on what he does in Arizona, San Francisco may let starting backstop Bengie Molina go in free agency.

Infielders

The Scorpions' biggest bat will be Arizona Diamondback first baseman Brandon Allen, who finished the season in Arizona after getting traded from the Chicago White Sox in 2009.

Outfielders

There are three big name outfielders to watch from this group. The left-handed hitting Domonic Brown was being discussed in the Phillies trade offers for Roy Halladay and is definitely a big prospect. As is Jose Tabata, who has thrived since being traded as a failed talent in the Yankees system to the Pirates. Another player looking to prove himself in Arizona is Diamondbacks Cole Gillespie, who was traded from Milwaukee to Arizona in 2009 and hit .300 at Triple-A.
