2010 Baseball Draft Order, Top PicksWashington Nationals Win Bryce Harper Sweepstakes, No. 1 Pick
By having the worst record in Major League Baseball in 2009, the Washington Nationals have earned the first selection in the 2010 Draft - likely Bryce Harper.
The Washington Nationals finished the 2009 Major League Baseball season with the worst record and with it won the Bryce Harper Sweepstakes – the right to the No. 1 pick in the 2010 MLB draft. The Nationals, who will be picking number one for the season straight year after selecting Stephan Strasburg in 2009, will most likely draft the 17-year-old Harper from Nevada. 2010 Draft Order1. Washington Nationals (59-103) The Nationals did their best to screw up their No. 1 selection status, winning their last seven games of the season. 2. Pittsburgh Pirates (62-99) But the Pirates were too far back despite dropping two of their last three games. 3. Baltimore Orioles (64-98) The Orioles appeared headed to challenging the Nationals as they lost 13 straight games late but won their last four in a row to finish the season. 4. Kansas City Royals (65-97) The Royals also tried their best for the top spot, losing nine of their last 11. 5. Cleveland Indians (65-97) And even the Indians were hoping for an outside chance, falling in five of their last six games. 6. Arizona Diamondbacks (70-92) 7. New York Mets (70-92) 8. Houston Astros (74-88) 9. San Diego Padres (75-87) 10. Oakland Athletics (75-87) 11. Toronto Blue Jays (75-87) 12. Cincinnati Reds (78-84) 13. Chicago White Sox (79-83) 14. Milwaukee Brewers (80-82) 14B. Texas Rangers (for failing to sign Matt Purke) (87-75) 15. Chicago Cubs (83-78) 16. Tampa Bay Rays (84-78) 17. Seattle Mariners (85-77) 18. Detroit Tigers (86-77) 19. Atlanta Braves (86-76) 20. Minnesota Twins (87-76) 21. Texas Rangers (87-75) 22. Florida Marlins (87-75) 23. San Francisco Giants (88-74) 24. St. Louis Cardinals (91-71) 25. Colorado Rockies (92-70) 26. Philadelphia Phillies (93-69) 27. Los Angeles Dodgers (95-67) 28. Boston Red Sox (95-67) 29. Los Angeles Angels (97-65) 30. New York Yankees (103-59) 30B. Tampa Bay Rays (for failing to sign Levon Washington) (84-78) When teams finish with the same record, the tiebreaker (and higher pick) goes to the club with the worst record the previous year. Compensatory Picks After First RoundThe Blue Jays have picks 37B and 68B for failing to sign James Paxton and Jake Eliopoulos, respectively, as well as an extra pick after the third round for failing to sign Jake Barrett. Tampa Bay have compensatory pick 78B for failing to sign Kenny Diekroger. The White Sox will receive an extra pick after the third round for failing to sign Bryan Morgado, and the Angels will get an extra third round pick for not signing Josh Spence. Top High School Talents For 2010 DraftCameron Bedrosian, RHP, East Coweta HS, Ga Former MLB veteran Steve Bedroisian’s son can throw in the low 90s and has a nasty power curve. A.J. Cole, RHP, Ovedia HS, Fla A tall right-hander, Cole sits in the low 90s with his fastball and probably has the best arm of his class. Jameson Taillon, RHP, The Woodlands, HS, Tx. The usual big throwing righty from Texas, that is Taillon for the 2010 class. Low to mid-90s fastball and a power 12-to-6 curve. Top College Talents For 2010 DraftBryce Harper, C, Coll Southern Nevada The word Natural comes to mind with Harper, who is skipping his final two years of high to head to junior college and become draft eligible in 2010. He has hit balls 570 feet and pitched up to 96 mph. Nationals fans cannot wait for him. Anthony Ranaudo, RHP, LSU Perhaps the best college right-hander in the draft class, Ranaudo is 6-foot-7 and has learned to throw more than just the heat. Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Mississippi Like Ranaudo, Pomeranz was also taken by the Rangers out of high school but not signed. He led the Mississippi staff as a sophomore and guided Ole Miss to a Super Regional.
